Hard disks and RAID groups

In contrast to the consumer sector, where 2.5-inch HDDs are regarded as slower on account of their lower rotational speed and energy-saving design, in computer center operation 2.5-inch HDDs are in every respect the equal of 3.5-inch HDDs. This naturally only applies when models with a comparably high rotational speed are installed, ideally 15,000 rpm.

The following recommendations apply when configuring RAID groups:

  • For high performance requirements - above all in the event of a high write load - RAID 1/0 is recommended.

  • When the write load is not too high, a satisfactory performance can also be achieved with RAID 5 or RAID 6.

Detailed information on the RAID level is provided in section "RAID levels and their performance".
