Notational conventions

The following notational conventions are used in this manual for the presentation of important elements in the text:

Italic font

Identifies a variable for which you must specify a value.

Typewriter font

Used for input into the system, system output and file names in examples.

Command

In the command syntax descriptions, those items (command and parameter names) that have to be entered unchanged are printed in bold.

{ } and |

Curly brackets are used to indicate alternative syntax elements, of which you must select one. The available alternatives are separated by a vertical bar.

[ ] and |

Square brackets are used to indicate optional syntax elements, i.e. elements that can, but need not be used. If several alternatives are available, they are separated by a vertical bar.
