HSMS/ARCHIVE free tape pools in the MAREN catalog

&pagelevel(4)&pagelevel

In addition to general free tape pools in the MAREN catalog, special free tape pools for HSMS/ARCHIVE applications can be set up or removed by the All-Domain-Administrator (ADA) using the statement below:

//MODIFY-MAREN-PARAMETERS ...,
   FREE-POOLS=*PARAMETERS(FREE-POOL=<freepool>,ACTION=*ADD/*REMOVE)

The overall structure of HSMS/ARCHIVE free tape pools in the MAREN catalog may be as follows:

Free tape poolApplication
FREE-POOL=directoryname 1prereserved for directory 1
......
FREE-POOL=directoryname nprereserved for directory n
FREE-POOL=*TSOSprereserved for other HSMS/ARCHIVE applications under TSOS or for applications whose directory is cataloged under the TSOS user ID.
FREE-POOL=*GLOBALprereserved for all other HSMS/ARCHIVE applications under any user IDs or for applications whose directory is cataloged under any user ID.

All HSMS/ARCHIVE free tape pools are optional. See "Implicit/explicit reservation from the HSMS/ARCHIVE free tape pools" for how to select a pool. If an HSMS/ARCHIVE free tape pool is set up, HSMS/ARCHIVE requests will only be responded by this pool. Therefore you must ensure that there are enough free tapes maintained in each of the pools.

Only the All-Domain-Administrator can add tapes to the HSMS/ARCHIVE free tape pools. In the case of a free tape, this can be done using one of the following MAREN statements:

  • if the tapes are not yet in the MAREN catalog:
    //ADD-FREE-VOLUMES ..., FREE-POOL=...

  • if the tapes are already entered in the MAREN catalog:
    //MODIFY-VOLUME-ATTRIBUTES ...,SELECT=*FREE(NEW-FREE-POOL=...)

Tapes of the local data center which are already reserved can be assigned to a HSMS/ARCHIVE free tape pool retroactively with the MAREN statement below:

//MODIFY-VOLUME-ATTRIBUTES ...,SELECT=*RES(NEW-FREE-POOL=...)

By the same token, the allocation to an HSMS/ARCHIVE free tape pool for these tapes can also be canceled (NEW-FREE-POOL=*NO).

The individual values for FREE-POOL effect the following allocation to individual free tape pools in the MAREN catalog:

FREE-POOL=Meaning
*NOThe tapes are added to the general and not the HSMS/ARCHIVE related free tape pool.
*GLOBALThe tapes will be added to the free tape pool for general HSMS/ARCHIVE applications under any user ID.
*TSOSThe tapes will be added to the free tape pool for HSMS/ARCHIVE applications under the user ID TSOS. FREE-POOL=*TSOS is the free tape pool for HSMS/ARCHIVE tapes which are cataloged under the TSOS user ID.
<filename 1..54 without-gen-vers>The tapes are added to the free tape pool in the directory specified in this statement.

The specified tapes are added to the appropriate free tape pool; if this does not exist, it will be created.

Canceling HSMS/ARCHIVE free tape pools

Existing HSMS/ARCHIVE free tape pools can be canceled as follows:

  • For free tape pools with free tapes

    //MODIFY-VOLUME-ATTRIBUTES ...,
       SELECT=*FREE(FREE-POOL=<freepool>,NEW-FREE-POOL=*NO)

  • For free tape pools with reserved tapes
    If the free tape pool is for a directory, the following statement is sufficient:

    //MODIFY-VOLUME-ATTRIBUTES ...,
       SELECT=*RES(DIR-NAME=<filename>,NEW-FREE-POOL=*NO)

    If one of the *TSOS or *GLOBAL HSMS/ARCHIVE free tape pools is to be canceled, this statement must be entered for all directories containing tapes from this pool. If there are also tapes which are not in a directory, these must be modified individually or as part of a number range:

    //MODIFY-VOLUME-ATTRIBUTES VOL=*INT(...),SELECT=*RES(NEW-FREE-POOL=*NO)

  • Deletion of free tape pool when no more tapes are allocated to this free tape pool (free tape pool is empty).

    //MODIFY-MAREN-PARAMETERS ...,
       FREE-POOLS=*PARAMETERS(FREE-POOL=<freepool>,ACTION=*REMOVE)

  • Deletion of free tapes from the MAREN catalog which are no longer required:

    //REMOVE-FREE-VOLUMES=..., FREE-POOL=...
