In networks it is becoming increasingly important to detect address conflicts.
The aim here is to prevent faulty configuration in good time since assigning an address more than once in the same network can lead to problems which are difficult to diagnose.
IPv6 incorporated the method for Address Conflict Detection when it was introduced. This method is defined in the Stateless Address Autoconfiguration.
By contrast, it took some time before an analogous method based on ARP was introduced for IPv4.
