Although the Ethernet address is always unique throughout the world, a specific computer in a large LAN subdivided into subnetworks can be addressed much more easily and quickly by means of a structure in its Internet address (network address). Internet addresses are used both in LANs, in accordance with the ISO standard, and in TCP/IP networks. However, the format and conversion of Ethernet addresses into network addresses and vice versa are different.
