SNMP management in computer networks

&pagelevel(3)&pagelevel

SNMP stands for Simple Network Management Protocol and was developed as a protocol for network management services in the TCP/IP Internet.

Scope of application

The supervision and administration of LAN components such as bridges, routers, hubs etc. in heterogeneous networks with TCP/IP protocols was originally the only task of SNMP. Now the area of application of SNMP has been extended to include system and application management. Similar to TCP/IP, where the term does not only refer to the protocol itself, but the entire network, SNMP does not only stand for the protocol, but for the entire corresponding management system.

BCAM supports SNMP management via a private FJ-BCAM-MIB.

SNMP management architecture

The central component of an SNMP installation is the management platform. The management platform enables a clear display of the managed components and convenient operation. The network with all its systems and applications can be monitored and controlled from the management platform. SNMP is not tied to a specific management platform. The SNMP manager, also known as the management station, resides on the management platform. The SNMP manager is an application that communicates with partner applications, the SNMP agents, via SNMP over a TCP/IP network. Each managed component has an agent that provides the SNMP manager with up-to-date information about this component. The initiative for controlling the activities lies primarily within the SNMP manager, which keeps the burden on the managed components with management tasks low.

A detailed presentation can be found in the Manual SNMP Management (NET-SNMP) for BS2000.
