The objects in the syntax files are not structured the same way in all the SDF-A versions. When working with syntax files which have been created by older versions of SDF-A, the following applies:
- Current SDF-A is able to read all syntax files independent of their format.
- Current SDF-A will always use current file format when writing a syntax file. Updating a syntax file which before had an old format thus results in a format change.
- If an old syntax file format is mandatory, the DEFINE-ENVIRONMENT statement may be used to activate an older version of SDF-A for writing syntax files in the format related to the selected version (please see the description of DEFINE-ENVIROMENT for the available versions of SDF-A).
- Note that a syntax file can never be modified using an earlier SDF-A version than the one in which it was created and stored.
