VM Migration

&pagelevel(3)&pagelevel

On a Server Unit /390 or x86, a virtual machine can be migrated during guest system operation (VM state RUNNING) from the local Server Unit (source SU) to another Server Unit (target SU) of the same type, using the /MIGRATE-VM VM2000 command, while retaining its resources.

This is called VM Migration in this manual. Synonymously, the term Live Migration is used in BS2000.

During the VM Migration, the VM is only stopped for a short time. User operation, network transfers and transactions on the guest system continue normally on the target SU.

VMs in INIT-ONLY or DOWN state can be migrated as well.

The persistent VM definition of a VM that has not been initialized can be migrated using /MIGRATE-VM-DEFINITION, see section "Relocation of the VM definition during VM Migration".
