In order to communicate, the systems installed in a network require a physical medium via which data is transported, possibly with the aid of electrical or optical signals. Examples of such media include copper cables (two-wire/four-wire connection) or optical fibers.
The physical properties of the line and the software implemented for message transfer determine the transmission characteristics of a line. The transmission speeds attained on the physical medium depend on the line types used and their connections to computers.
