Device management during a VM Migration

&pagelevel(4)&pagelevel

Performing a VM Migration changes the reconfiguration states of the following devices of the VM:

  • Tape devices

  • Alias devices (PAV, SU /390)

  • Locally emulated disk devices (SU x86) or disk devices emulated on an MU (SU /390)

During the asynchronous execution of the VM Migration, these devices are implicitly detached on the source SU. During the synchronous checking of the prerequisites, the caller receives a warning for each of these devices.

After a successful VM Migration on SU /390, the alias devices are attached again on the target SU. Tape devices and local disk devices remain detached on the target SU.

If the VM Migration was not successful, all of these devices are attached again on the source SU.

When alias devices are detached, they are also removed from the VM. When they are attached, they are reassigned to the VM. Depending on the PAV configuration, alias devices on the source SU can be different from those on the target SU.
