Bridge

A bridge is required if a connection is to be established between adjacent LAN segments. The bridge checks the addresses of messages in the LAN, and forwards the messages accordingly. The function of the bridge is assigned in Layer 2 of the OSI Reference Model. Bridges that cooperate with each other in order to traverse other networks (e.g. a WAN network) are referred to as remote bridges.
