A switch is a multiport bridge that routes data traffic via a number of different ports to multiple network segments. It is used to subdivide a network segment into a number of smaller segments (microsegmentation) in order to increase the overall network bandwidth without boosting infrastructure requirements. The function of a switch belongs to the Datalink Layer of the OSI Reference Model.
Switches are hardware-implemented and therefore operate more efficiently than bridges which possess software-based functionality.
